STEAM Curriculum Guide – Kindergarten & 1 st Grade Our Kindergarten through first grade students are introduced to STEAM. We focus on building a foundation for the STEAM Program through standalone STEM activities, hands-on science, engineering lessons, and foundational skill activities. At the same time, our students engage in activities in coding with Botley Robots, Code.org, and our Lego Spike Essentials robotics. Students also are introduced to aviation through our flight simulators.
STEAM Curriculum Guide – 2 nd & 3 rd Grade Our students in second and third grade engage in STEAM Essential Skills taught through standalone STEM activities, hands-on science & engineering lessons with higher level activities. Students build on their foundation of coding skills with higher level Code.org lessons (using block coding) and Lego Spike Essentials. We have a 2nd grade Egg Drop project and 3rd grade Popsicle Stick Bridge project. These students also receive five-weeks of Aviation with flight simulator training using STEM Pilot.
STEAM Curriculum Guide – 4 th & 5 th Grades Students in fourth and fifth grade work on reinforcing essential science skills through STEM activities, hands-on science, engineering lessons, and activities such as advanced coding using Code.org and Lego Spike Prime Robotics. They also have 12 weeks of Aviation and flight simulation using STEM Pilot. Other activities include Artificial Intelligence and 3D Printing. STEAM Magnet Descriptor The STEAM Magnet program at Hungerford Elementary Advanced Curriculum Academy provides a foundation for collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity which extends to application in real-world contexts. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Aviation/Art and Mathematics) is a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to learning that combines science, technology, engineering, aviation/art, and mathematics. Through this educational model students are exposed to 21 st Century skills needed for workforce. Our science instruction incorporates the Scientific Method and the Engineering Design Process. Through this, students foster innovation, problem solving, and lifelong learning.
Technology classes are focused on the use of digital tools to engage students in problem solving activities across curricular content and creation. Our aviation classes engage our students in flight simulation activities where they are exposed to realistic piloting experiences. Furthermore, Math focuses on mathematical processes through real world experiences in efforts to teach students the importance of truth, the value of identifying patterns and trends, the purpose of structure, and the need to use logic and reasoning. All locally zoned Hungerford Elementary students take part in our STEAM Program, as well as our out-of-zone students that enroll through the OCPS Magnet Lottery.
